Manchester Weekender

Hello and welcome to a bit of a different post, more of an 'experience' one; if that's what it's called?! Thought I'd write about a trip me and my best friend took a couple of weeks ago, to see Arcade Fire at the MEN Arena; we had the best time and made so many memories! Coming back to uni from the Easter holidays can be disappointing; you've gone from eating your body weight in chocolate and lazing around the house to returning to the thought of exams and deadlines being upon you. However, I was quite looking forward to coming back for one reason; the fact that Holly and I were off on another city adventure, this time to Manchester where I've actually never been, except for to the airport! We left Sheffield around midday and caught a train to Manchester Piccadilly, where we were sat near the cutest child and in front of a dog, so cue 'doggy' 'I love you doggy' every 5 minutes - the most adorable thing. We got to Manchester and straight a...

A day in the life of a journalism student!

Welcome back to another blog post! Today as I'm sat writing a 2000 word essay on Police and Crime Commissioners, I'd thought I'd do a post on what it is like to study journalism, the work involved and a bit of a daily routine as to how a day in uni will go. Hope you enjoy reading it! TUESDAY. Tuesday's are my busiest day on timetable and I'm in uni from 12-6; might sound great as I get a lie in, but it's a long day and means I have lectures and seminars on each of my modules. I'll usually meet my course mate Charlotte and we walk to uni together, as I've been here 6 months and still hate going anywhere on my own, on the off chance I might get lost! Luckily she lives across the road and both of our accommodations are about a 5 minute walk from the main campus buildings. For the first two hours we're in the sciences building - always thought that was a bit odd but never mind! We head down to our lecture room to meet our other friends and sit do...

My favourite London spots.

Hello again! Just thought I'd write a bit of a random post on a Sunday evening because it's been a while! I spend quite a bit of time in London, be it seeing shows or just having a day trip to Oxford Street for a bit of retail therapy. These are some hidden gems that you may not know about or have just walked past - hopefully it'll encourage you to try them out next time you're in the city! The Theatre Cafe. It's actually become a bit of a running joke now that I cannot walk through Soho and not go into the Theatre Cafe. It is such a cool place - they serve musical themed drinks, Defying Gravitea being a personal favourite! The staff are as big musical geeks as the customers they attract, so expect to hear a lot of singing from behind the counter as well as from the tables! You can put your own favourite musical songs on the playlist from the iPad at the counter, meaning sometimes you'll hear new ones you've not heard of before. You can get ...

A bit of a personal one...

Well, here we are. Spilling my feelings and emotions onto a blog page, and I'm not going to lie, it feels a bit scary. I'm not sure I should even be doing it, as who knows what my family will think. But writing is my form of therapy now I don't have a piano to sit at, and I'm not that good at talking about this, so I guess I'll just out it on here. Whatever anyone thinks, it's not for attention, it's purely so that I can put things into words that I've not been able to for the last 3 years for fear of what people back home would think/say. I'm sure someone will want to make the comment of 'why not write this in a diary' or something along those lines, but here's my place to write and I want other people to know it's okay to feel this way. I'm sat in bed right now, feeling pretty fragile (and for once it's not because I've been out drinking the night before). 3 years ago today, I lost my Grandma to lung cancer. Now this i...

Get to know me!

Welcome to another blog post - I'm so happy to be black blogging that I thought I'd write another! I came across this question tag on google and whilst I don't want to answer all 25, I thought I'd pick ten just to let you know a bit more about me! 1. Your full name Charlotte Bethany Whelan - though honestly no-one calls me Charlotte anymore! 2. Zodiac sign Scorpio. I'm so into horoscopes and always check mine when it comes up on Facebook, Twitter etc. 3. Your best friend I honestly cannot pick just one, so you can have 4. Chloe, Georgia, Kelly and Holly, one I've known 15 years and one I've known 5 months but I love them all the same! 6. Your favourite movies Can't beat the classic Harry Potter series can you?! I also adore all three Bridget Jones' films, know all the words to Wild Child and have just seen The Greatest Showman for the second time. It is such a piece of art and anyone who hasn't seen it, needs to! 8. Favourite song...

Freshers Week madness!

Hello and welcome to another blog post, Thought I'd write a bit about an experience I've recently been through; the start of university life and the infamous 'Freshers Week'. I personally loved this week as it gave me the opportunity to get to know my new flatmates and coursemates as well as having a lot of fun. But depending on the type of person you are, the experience can be totally different. I know some people from High School who went into Freshers as shy, quiet people and came out the complete opposite! But this post is going to be based on my experience and a few bits of advice I'd give to anyone starting Freshers this September coming. 1. Be as sociable as possible.     I can't stress this one enough; it's so so important! When it's move in day, get some sort of door stop, even if it's just a box of your stuff. It lets your flatmates know that you're in and they can say hi when coming past, allowing you to introduce yourself to ea...

The 'Big Three'?

If you follow my Twitter or really any social media, you'll know that musicals are one of my favourite things and a passion of mine. Recently, I've been lucky enough to see the musicals known in the West End as the 'Big Three'. They are Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables and Wicked. I've seen Wicked 4 times and am so biased towards it as it is my favourite musical, meaning that sometimes I am reluctant to stray away from the familiarities of the Apollo Victoria. However, after seeing Phantom and Les Mis, I'm so happy they all lived up to their reputations and I was yet again mesmerized by the power of live theatre. I've wanted to review all three shows so I thought why not put them in a blog post together?! Please bear with me and my fangirling ways... ***************** CONTAINS SPOILERS - PLEASE DON'T READ IF YOU'VE YET TO SEE THE SHOWS************* Phantom of the Opera - 26th August 2017 (Her Majesty's Theatre) Ben Forster and Celind...
